What is Guiding?
What is Guiding?
Girlguiding is a worldwide organisation, which young girls can join from the age of 5 and remain a member throughout their lives.
The four key messages in Guiding are:
• We are for all girls
• We give girls their own space
• We give girls a voice
• We change as the lives of girls change
Girls are able to join any section relevant to their age, at any time, and continue through each section, subject to place being available. Please click here for details of the different sections. To put your daughter's name down for a place in a unit, please register here.
Girlguiding would not be unable to continue without the help of thousands of Adult Volunteers who give up their time to run the various units. There are many ways you can get involved: Adult Leader, Unit Helper, Treasurer, Secretary, casual help.......the list goes on.
All new Adult Leaders work towards the Girlguiding Adult Leadership Qualification and further trainings and development are avaialble. You can become an Adult Leader from the age of 18.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can register here.
The safety of our girls is paramount in all of the activities we undertake.
All of the activities carried out by Girlguiding are covered by liability insurance and Leaders have undertaken basic First Aid training.
To register your daughter for a place in a unit, this is done online.
Once your daughter has a place in a unit, you will be given a "Starting....." form relevant to the section she has joined (e.g. Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers). This will give you further details, such as what your daughter will need and the costs involved. It will also give you details about the unit she has joined nd the contact details of the Leaders and local Commissioner. You will also be asked to provide your details, emergency contact information and any information about medical conditions, disabilities or allergies your daughter may have to enable the Leader to plan activities accordingly. There is also a section on the form asking parents/carers for permission to use photos of your daughter taken during Guiding activities, which could be used for Guiding publications, websites and social media.
There is also a gift aid section on the form - this is an important part of the form and means if you pay income tax, your daughter's unit will be able to claim 28p for every £1 you give in subs or donations. This money will go back into the unit to help with running costs.
All of our Leaders are volunteers so they don't get paid to run their units. Hwoever, there are still costs involved such as the hire of the meeting place, equipment, badges and materials for activities. Guiding units therefore charge 'subs' to cover these costs. These can be paid weekly, monthly or each term, and the Unit Leader will be able to provide further information.
Every February, Girlguiding carries out a census. This is a count of every girl, leader and member in Girlguiding and is completed by all units. At the same time, every unit has to pay an annual subscription, which is paid to cover the day-to-day running of the association.
As a guideline, in February 2018 the annual subscription charge in Girlguiding Bristol & South Gloucestershire was £32 per member. Some units include this payment in with the subs, others may request this payment at the time of the census. Your daughter's Unit Leader will be able to tell you about the amount as well as how and when you would be expected to pay.
During her first few meetings, whilst your daughter is trying out Guiding, she does not need to have any Guiding clothes or books. It is up to you and your daughter's Unit Leader to agree when it would be best for her to start wearing her Guiding clothes and using her books.
Uniform and books can be purchased via your Unit Leader or from the Girlguiding website. To get an idea of the cost of these items, please visit the Girlguiding online shop. In some areas it is possible to buy Guiding clothing second hand. Please ask your daughter's Unit Leader for advice.
