Welcome to the Girlguiding Bristol & South Gloucestershire (BSG) Website

Girlguiding Bristol and South Gloucestershire (BSG) is part of Girlguiding – the largest organisation for girls and young women in the UK. Our Guiding County is divided into 11 Divisions which includes the city centre, towns and villages.  We have over 5,500 young members aged between 5 and 26, and over 1,200 volunteer Qualified Leaders plus another 200 recognised volunteers.

We are a friendly, forward looking County and our aim is to provide the best Girlguiding and life opportunities for all our members. We preserve the values of Girlguiding whilst ensuring we remain current to the needs of today’s girls.

We give girls a voice in the modern world, listen to their views and provide fun and friendship along the way.

We enable our members to discover, fulfil and exceed their potential through a wide range of exciting activities they may not otherwise have the opportunity to do.

Our programme is designed to enable girls and young women to make a positive contribution to their community and make a difference in the world.

We aim to support both our younger members and our adult volunteers to go that extra mile to truly encourage them to ‘Discover’ and ‘Grow’.

If you're already involved as a volunteer with Girlguiding BSG then please allow me to thank you for all that you do for our girls. Many guiding opportunities wouldn't happen without very special people like you.

Maria Jenkins - County Commissioner

What is Guiding?

What is Guiding?

Girlguiding is a worldwide organisation, which young girls can join from the age of 5 and remain a member throughout their lives.

The four key messages in Guiding are:

We are for all girls

We give girls their own space

We give girls a voice

We change as the lives of girls change

Girls are able to join any section relevant to their age, at any time, and continue through each section, subject to place being available.  Please click here for details of the different sections.  To put your daughter's name down for a place in a unit, please register here.

Volunteering

Girlguiding would not be unable to continue without the help of thousands of Adult Volunteers who give up their time to run the various units.  There are many ways you can get involved:  Adult Leader, Unit Helper, Treasurer, Secretary, casual help.......the list goes on.

All new Adult Leaders work towards the Girlguiding Adult Leadership Qualification and further trainings and development are avaialble.  You can become an Adult Leader from the age of 18.

If you are interested in volunteering, you can register here

Safety

The safety of our girls is paramount in all of the activities we undertake.

All volunteers undergo a DBS check.  We also require personal references and ask Leaders to adhere to Girlguiding's Safe from Harm policy, "A Safe Space".

All of the activities carried out by Girlguiding are covered by liability insurance and Leaders have undertaken basic First Aid training

Forms

To register your daughter for a place in a unit, this is done online.

Once your daughter has a place in a unit, you will be given a "Starting....." form relevant to the section she has joined (e.g. Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or The Senior Section).  This will give you furthed details, such as what your daughter will need and the costs involved.  It will also give you details about the unit she has joined nd the contact details of the Leaders and local Commissioner.  You will also be asked to provide your details, emergency contact information and any information about medical conditions, disabilities or allergies your daughter may have to enable the Leader to plan activities accordingly.  There is also a section on the form asking parents/carers for permission to use photos of your daughter taken during Guiding activities, which could be used for Guiding publications, websites and social media.

There is also a gift aid section on the form - this is an important part of the form and means if you pay income tax, your daughter's unit will be able to claim 28p for every £1 you give in subs or donations.  This money will go back into the unit to help with running costs.

Costs

All of our Leaders are volunteers so they don't get paid to run their units.  Hwoever, there are still costs involved such as the hire of the meeting place, equipment, badges and materials for activities.  Guiding units therefore charge 'subs' to cover these costs.  These can be paid weekly, monthly or each term, and the Unit Leader will be able to provide further information.

Every February, Girlguiding carries out a census.  This is a count of every girl, leader and member in Girlguiding and is completed by all units.  At the same time, every unit has to pay an annual subscription, which is paid to cover the day-to-day running of the association.

As a guideline, in February 2016 the annual subscription charge in Girlguiding Bristol & South Gloucestershire was £28 per member.  Some units include this payment in with the subs, others may request this payment at the time of the census.  Your daughter's Unit Leader will be able to tell you about the amount as well as how and when you would be expected to pay.

Uniform

During her first few meetings, whilst your daughter is trying out Guiding, she does not need to have any Guiding clothes or books.  It is up to you and your daughter's Unit Leader to agree when it would be best for her to start wearing her Guiding clothes and using her books.

Uniform and books can be purchased via your Unit Leader or from the Girlguiding website.  To get an idea of the cost of these items, please visit the Girlguiding online shop.  In some areas it is possible to buy Guiding clothing second hand.  Please ask your daughter's Unit Leader for advice.

rainbows logo

Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding.  They are aged between 5 and 7 years old.

 brownies logo

Brownies are girls aged between 7 years and 10 years.

Some girls have already joined the Guiding movement as Rainbows and have reached their 7th birthday, so have moved onto the next section – Brownies. Other girls who have heard about the fun Brownies have, join their local unit.

You don’t need to have been a Rainbow to join Brownies. Any girl aged 7-10 years from whatever culture and faith can join. Disability is not a barrier to joining.

Are you 10 to 14? Welcome to Guides!

Being a Guide is all about belonging to a group, learning new skills, making new friends and helping others. Each Guide is encouraged to achieve her personal goals through a progressive programme with the opportunity to work for a wide variety of badges. This allows the girl to mature and develop at her own pace. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, how good you are at school or what you look like.

This is the place for young women aged 14-26 who want to participate in an exciting programme, make decisions for themselves, and most of all have fun!  The Senior Section is about flexibility and each member choosing an individual program to suit them.
